This position is responsible for all things “Underwriting” and its impact within Highland Capital Brokerage. The position reports to Senior Management and serves Highland Capital’s internal and external BGA (Brokerage General Agencies) customer. This role includes expertise in all aspects of Underwriting, with an eye to Financial UW along with development and execution of effective marketing and strategic planning designed to improve Highland's reputation and standing in the BGA marketplace.

  • Candidate will exhibit leadership, understanding of the BGA distribution, technical underwriting knowledge, advocate for the art of underwriting, underwriting for what you need to know, not for what you want to know, and field underwriting, and strong relationships with the carriers.  Candidate will be a marketer underwriting leader
  • Develop and execute Strategic Planning including oversight and leadership of strategic direction for Underwriting
  • Develop and execute Marketing strategies: identifying key areas for growth, elevating the knowledge, exposure and effectiveness of all levels of Sales, Operations and Underwriting within HCB (High Capital Brokerage)
  • Increase visibility and liaison role with carrier partners and industry players  
  • Expand current relationships with both partner carriers and other industry entities (including but not limited to Chief Underwriters, Medical Directors, etc.)
  •  Keep abreast of change in the insurance environment affecting sales, risk analysis, processing and underwriting of products
  • Represent face of Highland’s Underwriting both outward and inward with goal of improving strength, efficacy and positive results
  • Attend Underwriting focused group meetings providing educational and networking opportunities
  • Ability to prove strong technical and medical underwriting expertise and practical knowledge
  • Exhibit proficiency with Financial UW expertise as needed and required
  • Coordinate with leadership of New Business and Sales Support providing seamless exchange of information improving the process in its entirety 
  • Provide oversight of service standards and key performance indicators along with general oversight of the team of underwriters (currently 4 people).  Perform HR Functions, communication with team on developing issues, carrier changes, industry information, etc.
  • Responsible for overall underwriting training within the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred, H.S. Diploma or GED certificate + Significant Practical Experience will be considered

Basic Requirements:

  • 5 to 10 years of Financial Services Industry experience
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in a  BGA Underwriting Leadership Role, with focus on financial underwriting, strategic planning, marketing and compelling case advocacy
  • FALU (Fellow Advanced Life Underwriting)


Preferred Requirements:

  • Life and Health state licenses are preferred
  • Experience and adaptability working with Data Base systems – Agency Integrator, CRM (Client Relationship Manager) and Paper Clip
