Senior Associate, Life Sciences with Ladenburg Thalmann

Senior Associate, Life Sciences with Ladenburg Thalmann

Location(s):      277 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10172

                        Considering remote candidates

Role Type:        Full time

About the Opportunity:

Ladenburg Thalmann is seeking candidates with strong life sciences domain knowledge to join its team for a Senior Associate position. The candidate would ideally work in the firm’s Midtown Manhattan office, although we would potentially consider hiring an outstanding candidate who would work remotely (with periodic travel to NYC as requested).

The team is looking for a professional with a strong life sciences consulting and/or pharma industry background.  The ideal Candidate has a balance of strong logic, technical, analytical and communications skills to help build strong relationships with biopharma companies to help them raise important financings.  The position has two primary focuses: (i) the position (~50%) will have responsibilities related to identifying, analyzing and establishing contact with and otherwise helping in the prospecting/business development process with respect to biopharma and medical device companies with which to enter into RIF and other non-dilutive financing transactions; and (ii) as an integral part of the RIF deal team, ~50% of this team member’s time would be spent working on all aspects of the deals, in close direct contact with senior management at our clients, in particular helping to prepare Confidential Information Memoranda, which is the primary material that the firm uses in profiling the biopharma/device companies and their products for prospective capital providers as part of RIF transactions.  The small size of our team helps differentiate this role from traditional investment banking roles: each member of the team has a primary role, but we all pitch in and back each other up working on things together; it’s a relatively flat structure where everyone has a voice; and there’s immediate and constant client interaction with senior pharma executives.  This is a position that will place you on the front line of precedent-setting biopharma industry financing transactions, with a flexible approach to schedule.  We have a culture of hard work and lifestyle balance – we work hard, and you will sometimes work late on a key deliverable as part of a financing transaction.  Working on the weekend is generally forbidden.  We are based in NYC, but we would consider adding a team member that works remotely.

About Ladenburg Thalmann:

Biopharmaceutical, medical device and diagnostics companies traditionally fund operations by selling equity: angel investors, venture capitalists and eventually public market equity investors provide equity capital in exchange for an ownership interest in the Company. This typically happens a number of times as the company advances its R&D assets along the development pipeline, acquires other pipeline/commercial assets and expands its commercial infrastructure. For companies whose clinical trials are successful, valuations typically continue to increase, and equity investors enjoy substantial returns, though each subsequent capital raise frequently dilutes previous investors’ ownership interests in the company. However, companies with assets that have reached a certain level of maturity (generally post Phase II and more frequently at commercial stage) and have the right characteristics in terms of the competitive positioning and differentiation of their product(s) are often strong candidates for non-dilutive capital, in which they can raise money from investors without selling additional equity.

Ladenburg Thalmann is one of only two firms on Wall Street exclusively focused on helping such companies raise non-dilutive capital, frequently in the form of royalty/revenue interest financing (“RIF”). The firm’s founder pioneered the creation and development of the Revenue Interest Financing market as a co-founder and general partner of Paul Capital Healthcare, the first private equity fund created in 1999 to acquire royalty interest and provide synthetic royalty/revenue interest financing, and since that time has structured, negotiated and closed more than 50 transactions worth in aggregate more than $2 billion dollars, including many precedent-setting financings.

  • With respect to working as an integral part of the deal team on financing transactions (~50%): (i) working with clients and other team members to develop Confidential Information Memorandum for each new financing transaction and (ii) building detailed epidemiological models to forecast revenues for primarily biopharmaceutical products focusing on identifying and utilizing publicly-available secondary source data.
  • Both primary components of the team member’s responsibilities would require the ability to conduct sophisticated research (on broad industry trends, specific pharmaceutical assets, etc.) to inform the decision-making of the overall team
  • All other duties as assigned

  • Master’s Degree from accredited university with an emphasis on the sciences required, Doctorate Degree preferred
